LCF TOURNAMENT OF ROSES NEEDS VOLUNTEERS
Since New Year's Day 1979, a La Canada Flintridge Tournament of Roses float has been an integral part of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade. This year's float features a wizard who is a little surprised at how large his origami dragon has become! While the other, appropriately sized origami creatures are sitting idly by, the dragon has knocked over pillars and potion bottles with his tail.
To make the folded wizardry happen there are many, many things to be done now, long before the flowers arrive. For example, the buckets, which flowers go into for a drink of water prior to being applied to the float, need to be washed. Vials, which will hold roses and other flowers on the float, also need to be cleaned and inventoried. Tiny statice petals need to be cut off the plant so they can dry before being applied. Construction is always happy to teach newcomers the ins and outs of building a float. No experience is necessary!
There are many activities at the float site which are perfect for groups or individuals. The float’s “home” is behind the Valley Water Company, on Hampton just off of Foothill Blvd. A few hours of help on a Saturday, after school, or at other times by arrangement would be much appreciated. If you prefer, statice can be taken home for cutting at your leisure.
This is a great way to become involved in the community. Volunteering with the float is a fun way to fulfill community service requirements. So come on out and get to know us! Bring a friend! Wash a bucket or two, cut some statice, participate in the construction of the float, or just see what's going on.
We'd love to meet you!
